HTML emails - the dos and don’ts
Thursday, May 07, 2009
I just received yet another really badly formatted HTML email. PLEASE let us professionals do these things for you!!! This one actually said “place logo here” under the logo the person had evidently placed. They had sent this to over 200 recepients this email using the CC field. Meaning everyone can view their customer list. Not a good idea.
There are rules about sending out bulk emails to your contacts here are some of them.
DON’T bulk send from outlook, mail, entourage
DON’T use the CC carbon copy field
DON’T use multiple punctuation eg !!!!!!!!!!!!! or ?????????
DON’T have too many graphics
DO use an online HTML email sending provider. This will also give you great statistics on who has opened it.
DO have an unsubscribe link
DO provide a link for an online version for example “If this email doesn’t display correctly, click here”
DO have a relevant subject
DO make sure the email looks good
DO get to the point immediately
DO write the HTML in table format with in-line CSS
This is not an exhaustive list. Just some pointers if you want to get going and do this on your own. Of course you can save yourself the hassle and give us a call and we’ll do all the nitty gritty stuff for you!
