Getting Images Right for the Web

Sunday, June 21, 2009

Making sure you best site looks great often involves getting the imagery right. Often this will be taken care of in the design, but if you have a content management system or are manually editing your pages you may need to change the images from time to time.

The first thing to remember is your average digital camera takes a pretty large picture these days, files will be about 3Mb. Your aim for the web is to make your file sizes as small as possible whilst retaining quality. This will ensure your site is nice and light and loads quickly for your users. Your images will need to be resized for your website. Your image resolution should be 72dpi which is generally called web resolution.

Here are some tools that can help you:

Desktop Programs
Photoshop Elements

Twitter or not to Tweet

Friday, June 19, 2009

I have lost count of the amount of times I have been asked this week if their company should be twittering/tweeting. It seems the situation in Iran brought home the power of Twitter for many people this week.

My answered varied depending on who I was speaking to, if you want to develop a community awareness of your business, if you wish to be communicating more directly with your customers, if you will tweet on a regular basis then, yes, a great idea.

Doing it because everyone else is, is perhaps not the best reason. But by all means get involved and get your toes in the water. You may find you really enjoy it!

Google Chrome

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Google Chrome is a fabulously designed browser with sophisticated technology to make surfing the web faster, safer, and easier. Released in December 2008 by May 2009, Chrome was the fourth most widely used browser, with 1.80% of worldwide usage share of web browsers.

Chrome helps you browse safely by periodically downloading updates of two blacklists (one for phishing and one for malware), that warns users when they attempt to visit a harmful site. Firefox and Safari also do this but Internet Explorer does not. So if you haven’t been swayed to Firefox as yet I would recommend Chrome.

Check it out and let us know how you find it. (we’ve just downloaded the mac version but its still in beta so a bit unstable apparently.)
