4.5 Petabytes

Friday, May 22, 2009

An interesting figure - I have to admit I have had to look up exactly what a Petabyte is. If you’re interested it is one quadrillion bytes (1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes). To put that in context a Gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes, a megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes. Allegedly the size of the Internets Archive Wayback Engine. My .net magazine is claiming this is the size of the internet - housed in a single 20 foot shipping container.

Digital Planet

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

The BBC World Service has a weekly podcast called Digital Planet that discusses how digital technology is affecting our lives around the world. Well worth a listen - you realise just whats happening in other countries. This week Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez launches a new phone called the Vergatario (translation - a large penis). Possibly the cheapest phone available anywhere, it sports a camera, WAP internet access, FM radio and MP3 and MP4 players for music and videos.

Open Office

Monday, May 18, 2009

I’m a dedicated Pages user myself but I often come across people struggling with Word and spending way too much time trying to figure out how to open different versions etc. If you want to bypass all of that have a look at Open Office. It is a great free alternative to the microsoft office packages. Its easy to use, easy to install and absolutely free. Why spend good money on something when there is a fabulous free alternative!

A great tool for understanding what Google sees. You can submit sitemaps and remove old links from Google’s cache of your site. It will list problems with your site that are having an effect on your Search engine ranking. From duplicate title tags to broken links. If you have a google account you can add it to you list of tools in your control panel.
